What you will learn at this facility
The Great East Japan Earthquake, March 11, 2011. In Fukushima Prefecture, an earthquake with a maximum intensity of 6+ on the Japanese Shindo seismic scale, followed by a major tsunami then a nuclear disaster from the accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant resulted in an unprecedented triple disaster. At the museum, by viewing the exhibits and listening to the stories of survivors and taking the training program, visitors will learn how the events unfolded in Fukushima and how the people lived through the aftermath. We hope that by understanding the severity of the triple disaster it will help you prepare for the next disaster.

Exhibition tour
The museum’s collection comprises approximately 270,000 items related to the Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear disaster. They include photographs of areas before the disaster and materials describing the lives of evacuees at the time of the disaster and thereafter. Of these, about 200 items are on permanent display in the exhibition room. In addition to physical items and videos featuring testimony from survivors which convey the damage that was caused by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant accident, there are also commentaries on touch panel displays and a model of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant immediately after the accident, and more, enabling you to deepen your understanding of this unprecedented triple disaster.

Storytellers
The museum offers storyteller lectures four times a day, 40 minutes each, in the workshop space inside the exhibition area. Residents affected by the disaster take turns on a daily basis to tell their stories, and anyone with an admission ticket can listen.
The storytellers experienced the disaster in different places. And the theme of their stories are varied based on their experiences of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant accident. The contents of the storyteller lectures are memories that must be passed on to future generations and are lessons for disaster prevention and mitigation.

Training program
Training programs are available as an option for viewing the exhibition.
Through “fieldwork” in the disaster-stricken areas of Futaba and Namie towns, and “training programs through storyteller lectures” in which you can listen to the real voices of the survivors, you can see, feel, and learn the facts of the unprecedented triple disaster, the current situation and challenges of the reconstruction.
In the workshop, participants can deepen their understanding by sorting and sharing the lessons and perspectives learned from the earthquake and nuclear power plant accident and figuring out how to connect them to solving problems in their own communities and society as a whole.
*In principle, for groups of 20 or more, and prior reservation is required.
